overview

Their Summer Food Festival was inspired by all the best tastes around the world, from the humblest streets to the most vibrant spice markets. Waitrose wanted their Summer Food Festival to bring culture, colour, diversity, joy, and celebration to their channels. We took on the challenge!

challenges

There were plenty of challenges facing Kolorcraft with this project. Designing displays that would convey the vibrancy of food festivals from around the world, but which would work in a busy store environment, being robust enough to be displayed for several months, be shoppable and updateable. Sustainability was high on the agenda and using materials that were environmentally friendly was an absolute must whilst maintaining a premium look and feel.

requirements

  • Create vibrant POS displays that are functional in store

  • Create an interactive experience for shoppers

  • Drive product sales

  • Create a display robust enough to last for several months

  • Look premium whilst using sustainable materials

solutions

So, what ideas did Kolorcraft present to Waitrose? Using the mood board supplied by the Waitrose design team for inspiration we sent over an initial visual presentation with our ideas replicating a vibrant, colourful street market with display stands in the shape of Tuk-Tuks and a canopy imitating the repurposed shipping containers that feature in the street market scene.

The cantilevered canopy proved a real challenge and incorporated counterweights into the structure to stabilise it once it was in situ. It was visible from all sides so the mechanisms to hold it in place needed to be hidden, making sure it looked good from the back as well as the front.

In addition to being signed off by the creative team, the Health and Safety team had to be confident that it would stand the test of time and be safe for shoppers and colleagues alike.

We provided a virtual walkthrough on our end2end online platform using our 3D virtual store tool of all the printed elements in-store, showing the Gold and Core executions.

We produced blank, full-sized samples for testing to ensure we had the design just right before presenting printed, full-sized mock-ups for the store walk to show to Head of Design.

To showcase to Waitrose exactly how customers would see the displays and how they’d appear in an open store, prior to a full production run.

So, what did we produce? We manufactured, built, and professionally installed vibrant pink and yellow Tuk-Tuks plus crate wraps, mid panels and headers on the Front of Store Display Units as well as the canopy roof complete with lights and interchangeable promotional bird’s beak mechanism in all the top Waitrose stores.

All materials were recyclable corrugated, honeycomb, and display boards - and produced digitally on advanced flatbed machines. They were partly assembled before shipping, with assembly instructions and installer training provided to ensure smooth in-store setup.

I just wanted to say a MASSIVE thank you for last night’s review of summer gold stores in Bracknell. I genuinely thought everything is looking so strong and you have all done a brilliant job. That there are so few tweaks for a very extensive piece of work should not be underestimated. I truly got back in my car with a smile on my face. I really believe that what you have designed is joyful, unique and will bring our stores to life this summer.
