Green is our favourite ‘Kolor’ - achieving carbon neutral status!
Big impact, small footprint. How is our carbon footprint measured?
We are based in the heart of Yorkshire in a town called Ossett where we operate from five sites. To begin the process, we were measured on our operational control boundary which was then followed by a site tour of all our locations in order to assess our carbon footprint.
We then let the expert greenhouse gas verifiers from Environmental Strategies get down to business. They monitored areas and measured electric and gas consumption statistics at each site, while the same invoices were collected for LPG, gas, oil and butane use. We have always tried to be thoughtful in the machinery and technology we use. That is why two of our sites use a biomass boiler, which are deemed environmentally friendly because the fuel comes from renewable sources. It really does show how these changes can actually have such a positive impact on the business overall.
We made an estimate for greenhouse gas emissions by considering mileage records and also looking into our fuel card statements. This was to determine the volumes of diesel and petrol used in our commercial vehicles and company cars. Due to our passion for sustainable energy, all of our company cars are either hybrid, electric or diesel, and this was reflected in the carbon conversion factors used.
But what does all that information mean?
After calculating our carbon footprint, and offsetting our activity with The Cikel Project, we can officially state that we have a carbon neutral energy footprint - and we're chuffed to bits!
Our carbon footprint was estimated to be 639.6t CO2e, while 640 Verified Carbon Units were retired on the Verra Registry because of our work with The CIKEL Project in Brazil.
Curious about scoring your business? The approach taken to estimate our carbon footprint is based on the GHG Protocol Principles of relevance, accuracy, completeness, consistency, and transparency.
The CIKEL Project
The CIKEL Project works to avoid CO2 emissions by avoiding deforestation of part of the Rio Capim Complex, located in Paragominas in Para State, Brazil. This is a region with the highest rate of deforestation in Brazil, so we are passionate about our support.
As the first REDD project within the Verifies Carbon Standard (VCS) framework in the Amazon, the CIKEL Project helps reduce 9.4 million tonnes of CO1 emissions that would have been emitted into the atmosphere over the next 10 years.
CIKEL opted to protect the environment by conserving the area and practising sustainable forest management over a total of approximately 200,000 hectares, where a total of 120 million tonnes of CO2 is stored.
