Kolorcraft further net-zero ambition by planting hundreds of trees

Our quest to be carbon neutral

Earlier this year, we invested in the Cikel project to offset our carbon footprint and achieve net zero carbon status for energy. It was amazing to achieve a Carbon Neutral status!

Achieving carbon-neutral status wasn’t enough for our managing director, Michael, though! He was very keen to invest in a local environment project here in Yorkshire. This was above and beyond what was required to achieve carbon-neutral status, but his passion for sustainability, and the local area, led to this passion project.

Since then, through the Net Zero Group and their UK tree-planting partners, Forest Carbon, we’ve found a project to invest in York.

Tree planting: Tom’s Wood

Green is definitely our favourite ‘Kolor’, that’s why we got involved in a project called Tom’s Wood. This is a new native woodland that supports local biodiversity and improves woodland connectivity in the surrounding area

Kolorcraft has funded the planting of 250 trees which will sequester or absorb x81 tonnes of CO2 over the next 50 to 100 years. We’re extremely proud of this, and the fact that we’re helping the local environment in Yorkshire - the place we call home!

What is 1 tonne of CO2 equal to?

It’s hard to understand what all this hard work looks like.
To help you visualise there are many online calculators.
We have found out that 1 tonne of CO2 is equal to:
A return flight from Paris to New York
Over 3720 miles with
a diesel engine
Charging your phone over 121,000 times
Ecological benefits of tree planting

As well as the ecological benefits of the Tom’s Wood project, the total trees planted will sequester over 14,000 tCO2e during their growing lifetime. It’s likely that significant additional carbon sequestration will also occur in the site’s soils, which have been used for arable agriculture in recent history.

In total, there were around 28,000 trees planted across 17.57 hectares at Tom’s Wood as part of the project. Species of trees included Alder, Goat Willow, Sycamore, Birch, and Wild Cherry. Not only is this project beneficial to the local community, but wildlife will be able to thrive.

Our figures are recorded on the Woodland Carbon Code registry as “Assignments” based on future carbon sequestration.
